Cocamidopropyl Betaine, or CAB/CAPB for short, is a widely-used amphoteric surfactant. It’s a mild coconut-derived active ingredient, increasingly used as an emulsifier, thickener, and foaming agent in various household detergents, personal care products, and cosmetics, especially in gentle baby care products, such as baby shampoos and baby bubble baths.

Thanks to its mildness and compatibility with other surfactants, Cocamidopropyl Betaine has been a popular choice as a primary or secondary surfactant in an extensive range of formulas. CAPB can have excellent synergistic effects with other surfactants in formulas, to achieve higher viscosity, richer foam, and lower irritation to the skin and eyes.

Like other betaine-based amphoteric surfactants, CAPB is effectively anti-microbial, being effective against various common bacteria and fungi such as Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pyogenes, Bacillus subtilis, Candida albicans, and Pityrosporum ovale.

Yeser Chemicals is a world-leading producer of Cocamidopropyl Betaine in quality and scale, with a 100,000 MT annual output capacity. The user list of Yeser® CAPB includes many globally known names, including P&GUnileverLiby, and Dettol.

Frequently Asked Questions

We are the producer and undoubtedly a world-leading producer of Cocamidopropyl Betaine(CAPB).

Both our quality and output capacity are among the top 5.

Cocamidopropyl Betaine is very mild and well tolerated by the skin.

CAPB produced with quality raw materials and regulated processes, meeting cosmetic-grade standards, is undoubtedly safe to use in many detergents, personal care products, and cosmetics.

The Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR) published two safety assessments on CAPB, and both assessments conclude that CAPB is safe to use in personal care and cosmetic products. The first assessment was published in 1991. The Panel reopened the final report on CAPB in 2007, based on updated data available. This latest comprehensive Final Report on the Safety Assessment of Cocamidopropyl Betaine studies abundant data and cases and concludes that CAPB is safe to use in cosmetics as long as they are formulated to be nonsensitizing.

No. Cocamidopropyl Betaine and Coco Betaine are two different chemicals, although these two names are often used interchangeably.

Cocamidopropyl Betaine’s CAS registration number is 61789-40-0, and Coco Betaine’s CAS registration number is 68424-94-2.

Coco Betaine is a natural surfactant, and Cocamidopropyl Betaine is synthetic. However,  Coco Betaine is more irritating and less biodegradable than Cocamidopropyl Betaine.

No. Cocamidopropyl Betaine(CAPB) is synthetic.

CAPB is produced through the reaction of coconut oil fatty acids (coconut oil or hydrolyzed coconut acid) with 3,3-dimethylaminopropylamine (DMAPA), which yields amidoamine as the intermediate. The amidoamine is then reacted with sodium monochloroacetate to produce CAPB.

The production process of Cocamidopropyl Betaine is typical chemosynthesis. So even though the main raw material (coconut oil fatty acids) to produce CAPB is natural, it can not be classified as a natural compound.

As per the assessment of The Environmental Working Group (EWG), Cocamidopropyl Betaine(CAPB) is of low concern for Cancer. It’s also not related to Developmental and Reproductive Toxicity. However, CAPB may be a potential cause of skin irritation in some individual cases, although believed to be rare.
