Ingredient Classification

Surfactants

Surfactants are compounds that lower the interfacial tension between substances. Surfactants may act as cleaning agents, wetting agents, emulsifying agents, foaming agents, or dispersants. They are considered the main active matter of detergents and personal care products.

Thickening Agents

Thickening agents or viscosity builders are ingredients added in the formula to increase the viscosity of a liquid, sometimes to turn it into a gel or paste form, without substantially changing its other properties.
Thickeners also increase the consistency and volume of detergents, personal care products, and cosmetics.

Conditioning Agents

Conditioning agents are additives added to hair and body care products to enhance the feel, appearance, fullness, lubricity, reflectance, and general manageability of hair and skin after using the products.

The conditioning agents in hair care and body care products are often cationic surfactants or polymers that cling to the hair or adsorb onto the skin, leaving a pleasant silky feel.

Moisturizers

Moisturizers or emollients are ingredients in personal care products and cosmetics used for protecting, moisturizing, and lubricating the skin.

Moisturizers modify the rate of water loss of skin. With different active ingredients, moisturizers fall into two categories: occlusives and humectants.

Chelating Agents

Chelating agents bind to iron (Fe2+/Fe3+), magnesium(Mg2+)and calcium ions (Ca2+), forming water-soluble complexes in an aqueous solution, thus preventing these metal ions from bonding to the surfactants. In this way, chelating agents contribute to softening the water and maintaining the effectiveness of the surfactants in the formulas.

pH Adjusters / Buffers

pH adjusters are ingredients to adjust the pH value of a formula to achieve and maintain the desired efficacy. In detergent, personal care, and cosmetic formulas, pH adjusting is commonly done either by increasing the alkalinity (with Sodium hydroxide) or increasing the acidity(with Citric acid).

Citric Acid is added into the formula not only to achieve a desired pH range of the formula itself, but also play a important role as a buffering agent for the aqueous solution to maintain a stable pH range when the final product is used.
